FAQ | Dermaplaning

A Smooth Operation

WHAT IS DERMAPLANING?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliative treatment similar in theory to microdermabrasion, but without the use of suction or abrasive crystals. The treatment involves a medical-grade, sterile blade that is stroked along the skin at an angle to gently remove the very top layer of skin, removing dead skin cells. Dermaplaning also temporarily removes the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) of the face, leaving an ultra smooth surface.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF DERMAPLANING?

By stimulating the development of new skin cells, this type of exfoliation promotes cell turnover and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. It leaves clients with a more youthful and dewy face, but without any harsh chemicals, excessive downtime, or pain.

As with any type of exfoliation, the removal of dead skin cells allows home care products to be more effective, reduces the appearance of fine lines, evens skin tone and assists in reducing milia, closed and open comedones, and minor breakouts associated with congested pores. Dermaplaning can be an effective exfoliation method for clients that have couperose (tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin), sensitive skin or allergies that prevent the use of microdermabrasion or chemical peels.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Rejuvenated Skin

Fresher, brighter, even skin tone and texture.

Fewer Fine Lines and Wrinkles

All of those new skin cells also help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, warding off some of the early signs of aging.

No More Peach Fuzz

The hairs do not grow back any differently than they already appear, but the treatment will tame and temporarily remove the fine peach fuzz on the skin

More Effective At-Home Skincare Regimen

The first several days after treatment are the prime time days for your skincare routine. Your hairless face and super-clean pores will be able to fully absorb and gain maximum benefit from your serums, moisturizers, and other products in your skincare routine.

Cosmetics Will Go on Easily

Your cosmetics will also go on much more quickly and easily once your face is clear of peach fuzz and dead skin cells.

Cleaner, Clearer Pores

This treatment serves as deep cleaning of the face that removes dirt, oils, and dead skin cells from the pores.

Helps Prevent Certain Acne Breakouts

Although Dermaplaning isn’t recommended for clients who have current, active breakouts, it can minimize the chance of future breakouts by cleaning your pores and getting rid of the dirt and oils that can sometimes become trapped in facial hair.

Gentle and Relaxing

Although the idea of having your face shaved with a scalpel may sound intimidating, the treatment is amazingly relaxing and enjoyable. This is a gentle treatment that involves no harsh chemicals and no tugging or pain. Dermaplaning is non-invasive and safe for all skin tones and types.

Convenient

This is a fast and easy treatment that involves no downtime. Most appointments last no more than an hour, and you’ll be able to get right back to your schedule afterward. Many patients even book these treatments during their lunch hour or during other breaks in their day, prompting many to refer to the service fondly as a lunchtime facial.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE TREATMENT?

I’ll start by cleansing your face and applying a solution designed to open up your pores. A sterile blade is held at a 45-degree angle and stroked against the top layer of skin during the treatment. Your skin will be held taut while the various parts of your face are addressed. Dermaplaning is non-invasive and involves no pain or discomfort. After, a Hydrojelly mask is applied, covering the entire face except for your nose, and left for about 10 minutes. Once removed, treatment will conclude with proper serums and moisture to aid and complement your fresh new skin.

AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Avoiding sun exposure and wearing sunscreen (SPF 30+) — important in the days immediately following your treatment

  • Avoid Retinols and exfoliants for the first 24 hours after treatment

  • Avoid the use of saunas or steam rooms for the first 24hrs

  • Be sure to wear sunscreen (SPF 30+) and avoid direct sunlight

  • If any nicks or scabs occur, use vaseline to accelerate the healing process

  • Redness can be reduced using skincare containing aloe vera, arnica, chamomile, niacinamide, and/or ceramides

HOW OFTEN CAN I DERMAPLANE?

I recommend that most patients wait at least four weeks before their next appointment. Four weeks will give your skin enough time to bounce back and replenish itself after being exfoliated.

DOES IT AFFECT MY HAIR GROWTH?

An old wives tale suggests that hair will grow back thicker and even darker after it’s been shaved off, but dermaplaning does not have this effect. This treatment does not impact or alter your hair follicles, nor will it influence the rate at which your facial hair grows. Hair growth is based on numerous factors based on the clients genetics, hormones, medications, etc.
